I’m referring to a book that I’ve been wanting to read for fun, the full title being “Female Chauvinist Pigs: Women and the Rise of Raunch Culture” by Ariel Levy. Based on the summary of the book and her blog, Ms. Levy talks about how women are being taught to participate in popular media/culture’s sexism against themselves. However, the title “Female Chauvinist Pig” is very misleading. This is because a female chauvinist, by definition, is a woman who thinks all women are inherently better/more valuable than men (whereas male chauvinists think men are inherently better/more valuable than women.) However, this book is about how women are internalizing and acting on male chauvinistic attitudes. So shouldn’t the title be revised to “The Female Male Chauvinistic Pig”?
By the way, I do fully agree that there are many women who are sexist against women (hence the slut-shaming and trash talk that sometimes ensues amongst them.)
Has anyone in the community read this book? If so, what did you think about it?
